Most likely you’ve stumbled upon the word “genset” while researching about backup power choices for your business, worksite, or home but what is a genset and what’s it for? Quite simply, “genset” is a short term for a generator set and it’s more commonly known as a power generator in Malaysia.
What is a genset for?
A genset or generator set is a portable equipment with an engine and alternator/electric generator used to generate electricity or to provide energy at a location. Usually, a generator set is used or brought to a developing worksite or other areas which are not connected to any power grids. Often, housing areas invest in a backup generator set too in the event that there are power outages. More importantly, generators need to be present at dangerous locations that require constant energy or electricity for example, deep mining areas, health care facilities, cell towers, airports, and more. Gensets in Malaysia can often serve as a main source of energy or as a supplementary electricity source for peak hour usage.
How does a genset work?
A genset typically works by having a type of engine and an alternator. Without going too technical, the engine converts a chemical energy of a certain fuel (which we will get into later) to mechanical energy. This mechanical energy is then used to spin the motor in the alternator which then converts mechanical energy into the final product, electricity. A generator set can be compared to the way a car works by turning fuel into electricity.
Types of genset
Generator sets come in a lot of types and sizes usually defined by the type of fuel source the genset uses. Here’s a list of the types of generator sets that use different fuel:
Gasoline generators are the most popular type of genset due to a few reasons. They use gasoline, which is easily available as well as being the cheapest option of fuel currently. Gas generators are also extremely portable compared to the rest, however, gasoline gensets are very short-lived and fuel inefficient.

Biodiesel generators use biodiesel which is a mixture of diesel and other biological sources like vegetable oil or animal fat. Since it is mixed with biofuel, it burns with less emissions hence making it more environmentally friendly and creates less waste.
Environmentally friendly options
These are generators that are run using low-emission fuel options that include propane, natural gases, or solar energy. Natural gases are widely available and affordable but are expensive to install and not portable. Propane burns very cleanly but is highly flammable with high installation costs. Solar generators rely on using the sun as the main energy source which can result in erratic fuel source and a slow charge time.
